This scene came to mind a few days ago from one of the greatest British comedy series ever created. I was sitting in my favorite cafe one night recently, as it is very quiet in an evening... when a large Chinese family came in. Why do foreign people speak so loud ? The noise grew and grew and the children rose their voices to. As my hearing is still a little sensitive I moved a table away from them, and immediately realized that might I look a little bit discriminatory. I had nothing to fear though as another woman soon got up from her table and told them to keep the noise down. Problem solved.
The sit com Father Ted was at first seen as very controversial, as it had Catholic priests as the main characters, and they were not exactly what you would call dedicated. In fact they had been dumped on Craggy Island by the church as a punishment. Today no one cares, but at the time it caused a media up roar, and it was aired on a newly created channel that showed more " edgy " programs - Channel 4. In fact unbelievably there only was 4 channels back then or at least that was all we had in our house at the time. A quick look on YouTube will turn up some great comedy moments from the show. It really was brilliant !
Latin people are like that. Italians, Spaniards, Latin Americans. I think it's their culture. They're just gregarious. Some are ignorant and don't understand how to be good guests in other countries. I can't be around such people. I prefer quiet Germans although that's changing too. Some Germans are obnoxious but generally they frown down on being loud.
ReplyDeletePeople eating in Italian restaurants are noisy in general, especially hen nights. I avoid then now. Everything has tomatoes and theres just umpteen sorts of pizza bread...lol
DeleteI like ketchup but not tomatoes. Italians are super gregarious people. In Germany, if you are too loud, I've heard they will actually go over to your table and tell you to quieten down. I've never observed that myself while in Germany though. Americans are known to also be loud and uncouth in foreign countries. I had a professor who said when she travelled to Europe, all the men there thought she was "easy" because she was Americans. That's really bad.
